Name: Maile Collection: Native Hawaiian Plant (1 out of 30)
Maile (Alyxia stellata) is a fragrant native Hawaiian vine found on most islands. Even though it’s a vine, it often grows more like a shrub. Its tiny flowers eventually turn into glossy fruits that ripen to a deep purple or black. Maile is deeply woven into Hawaiian culture especially for lei making. Today it faces threats from invasive rodents and game birds.
